Hats Wedding
I would love the guests to wear hats to a wedding in Canada. What wording do you put on the invitations?

We are british family living in Canada and wish to encourage the ladies to all wear wedding hats to the wedding and the reception.

Etiquette wise, you can tell your guests how formally to dress, but not what to wear. That being said, you can certainly encourage them to follow a theme if they decide to. Wedding hats are similar to a Renaissance theme, in that most guests probably won’t own something to wear already. Some guests may enjoy your idea, and decide to buy a nice hat for the day, but some may feel they’re spending enough already, or that they won’t use the hat again.

I would word the dress code something like this:

Black tie optional
For ladies, wedding hats are encouraged

Start looking around at yard and estate sales, and hit up thrift stores for some second hand hats. Have them on a table at the entrance to the ceremony for guests to borrow (if they want) who didn’t bring one.

Also, the bride and groom, and all the wedding party should be wearing hats. It’s only fair, in my opinion.
