If I had a large chunk of ivory , how could I find out how old it is and what it belonged to?
This chunk of Ivory is also embedded with petrified red OK soil in it . Its about 9 inches in length 5 inches tall and 4.5 inches in thickness. It has rings in it like a tree with little metal deposits . I live in Oklahoma City
That’s weird. I’m thinking mastodon. Can’t be an elephant for obvious reasons. Mammoth lived farther north didn’t they? They would carbon-14 date it probably. Interesting. Although if it were from an elephant why would they bury it in Oklahoma? It could’ve originated in Africa and then went through customs and somebody buried it out there. Makes no sense.
Oh, and ivory has been illegal for something like 100 years so what you’ve got there is an antique. It would not have made it through customs during the bulk of the twentieth century.
