History of Christmas Average:

The tradition of Christmas stockings seem to have originated around the third century, and implies the Bishop of Myra, who became in known as St. Nicholas. Legend has it that there was a fair and honorable man, whose wife had died, leaving him to care for her three daughters. The tradition in this country at that time was that a daughter had to have a dowry to marry, because this man was poor he felt bad that her daughters would never be able to marry. A day this information came to the attention of Bishop Nicholas of Myra, so one night he went to the house of man. Looking in the window, saw that the daughters had washed clothes and hung around the fireplace to dry, feeling the stockings hanging with the rest of his clothes got three small bags of gold and carefully dropped through the open window in the middle. The next morning as the girls are gathering their clothes were found bags of gold, now that he had money for a dowry! Of course, each girl married well and lived happily ever after. As the legend grew, people began to leave the means of small sacs or hanging around the fireplace in hopes that St. Nicholas would leave something like that.

A little north of Holland, the children use to establish their wooden clogs with straw in them, Father Christmas straw feed his reindeer and leave a small gift or treat obstruction in children. Italian children had a similar tradition leave their shoes by the door so that Santa Claus would leave a little gift or something in them. In France, children leave their shoes inside the fireplace and then find sweets or small gifts in them. Christmas Stockings in the U.S.:

As with any legend there are many variations. But the most likely hang the stockings became an American tradition of all immigrants was different coming to America and bring their own traditions with them and then be very close to each other traditions began to merge and modify what we have today. Another person who helped the tradition of hanging stockings by the chimney was Clement Moore his most famous poems of A Visit from Saint Nicholas, now called the night before Christmas. And as anyone who has read the poem we know, they say, the means were hung by the chimney with care in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. So a combination of different traditions and legends and famous poets gave birth to an American tradition. And today the average Christmas is an essential part in the celebration of Christmas in America.
