The First Red Hydrangea that blooms on new growth! – Forever & Ever Red
2006 has been an incredible number of plant introductions February only and earrings. This week we are to secure a new plant being a senior in the coming years – Hydrangea Forever & Ever Red. A sport of the original Forever & Ever, this big mop is the first red hydrangea that blooms on new growth! The bright red flowers top the burgundy, and stems mature to shades wonderful purple. The plant habit is compact, maturing to only 4 feet tall and wide.
Repeat blooms on a compact plant
If you are a lover of Endless Summer, this is a must have for your spring garden. As is the parents, the original Forever And Always, Forever and Ever Red seems to have all the qualities of the Endless Summer Hydrangea that gardeners have fallen in love with. Flowers several times in both old and new wood, ensuring that your hydrangea is covered in beautiful flowers throughout the season – tested reliably winter hardy to zone 4 (30 degrees below zero) to the test in Michigan. In addition, Hortensia Forever & Ever Red reportedly affected by soil pH. The red color should change to purple in all soils. Being overly cautious, very acid soils suggest adding a couple of handfuls of lime at planting. From what we have seen and heard, Forever & Ever has many qualities that quite possibly can make it superior to Endless Summer (if possible!), Including:
- Larger groups of flowers
- Larger individual flowers ruffled petal edges
- More compact growth habit by about one foot
- Wax, leathery leaves
Planting and care
- For best results plant in early spring to late summer
- Perform best in moist, but not wet, soil. Add the damp ground if you think the soil is too dry
- Prefers an area with morning sun and afternoon shade
- Plants to the top of the root ball is half an inch below the surface of the earth
- Mulch with two and three inches of compost
- Use a handful of bulb fertilizer at planting tone and again in late November and early March
- Can I cut in spring or summer or die on the floor in winter and still have lots of flowers next season
- Remove spent flowers as they fade and see the plant continue to flower all summer long
