How do you like the color of the sand: white, black or red? You can find all three within sixty miles. White Sands National Monument, just south of Alamogordo, New Mexico to the Valley of Fire, west of Carrizozo and Tularosa in the middle, you can have everything in one day.
White Sands National Monument, about fifteen miles southwest of Alamogordo, New Mexico on Route 70, is a spectacle worth seeing. The sand is white because the plaster is in the mountains of San Andres. Rain washes the gypsum to the Lake Lucero, which is located at White Sands Missile Range. This is off limits to civilians and regularly tours the rangers. The day's heat evaporates the water leaving the cast dry. The wind blows the sand and the shapes of the different types of dunes. wildlife survives in this harsh environment. Most it is nocturnal, choosing to remain underground during the heat of the day. You can see evidence of its movement on the footprints in the sand.
Sixty miles the North are black lava deposits in the Valley of Fire Recreation Area. The lava flowed through the crack in the ground at Little Black Peak and ran the south between 1,500 and 5,000 years ago. A nature trail winds through the lava fields. For the more adventurous can hike into the lava flow and even Little Black Peak walk. Wear sturdy boots and bring plenty of water. It's still in the Chihuahuan Desert. The lava covers over 125 square kilometers and reaches a depth of 160 feet. Flora and fauna abound in the now cooled lava. Day fees are collected at the door along with RV and tent camping rates. The costs of helping the Office of Administration Land of improving the facilities at the recreation area.
The area around Carrizozo is Billy the Kid Territory and Lincoln County range wars the 1870s. Before that ancient peoples petroglyphs carved into the lava. It led to the Mescalero Apache.
Forty miles south of Carrizozo and seventeen miles north of Tularosa mounds stand fifty feet-strewn stones. This site has had a special religious significance for the ancients who lived in the basin Tularosa. More than 21,000 drawings carved into the rocks. halo mask, circles, representations of animals, shaman designs, handprints and geometric designs. A mile round trip takes you to the set of petroglyphs. A route guide describes the location of eleven different stops on the road. The trail climbs fifty feet and has numerous stone steps and land. The Bureau of Land Management operates the Three Rivers petroglyph site. The daily rates and camping fees help support this site only.
These rock carvings were made by a group of Indians that archaeologists call prehistoric Jornada Mogollon. The petroglyphs were made in different ways. Some were only recorded at the patina of the rocks. The use of two rocks as a hammer and chisel others formed. The petroglyphs are very fragile and must be respected. Do not know why was done. But what if you add a way of life among people. They were very religious and had a close relationship with nature. This is left in his impressive artwork.
Back to Alamogordo. For all the work done by White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base, Alamogordo museum has its own space. Not as elaborate as the Space Museum in Hutchinson, Kansas, he stands by itself. It delves into the space station, the shuttle and space exploration to honor principles of many men and women who have contributed to the program. The best sample is outside the museum. Daisy Decelerator is the theme, which tested the strength G of abrupt deceleration. Fascinating!
